Class 160 Electric Locomotive

Hobby Horse, "Bubikopf", Crocodile, or Pants Crease: Many locomotives were given a nickname by the railroaders. This also applied to the electric switch engines of the class E 60 (later 160). 14 units came between 1928 and 1934 to the German railroad. They were very powerful (1,460 horsepower) and offered an unusual appearance: Above the three-axle side rod drive system was a long, massive hood and a shorter hood and the cab with the pantograph. This quaint appearance quickly resulted in the nickname "Flat Iron". These units provided reliable, orderly service for decades at larger South German stations, the last unit being retired in 1983.

Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 160 electric switching locomotive. Purple basic paint scheme. Locomotive road number 160 002-2. Operating condition around 1971.
